where we have native (Spanish) cashmere
goats. This gives us the opportunity to
produce both the cashmere fiber and a good
meat goat.
Through selection you can improve the
quality and quantity of cashmere. This
requires a culling process but the results
will give you a fine fiber cashmere herd and
a meat goat generated income.
It is envisioned that the foundation of a
sound cashmere industry at affordable cost
within the reach of ordinary landowners will
be based on cashmere bearing meat or Spanish
goats.
Texas has the largest Spanish goat population
in the nation and at least 10 to 15% of these
animals bear cashmere. Thus, without doubt,
Texas has the largest cashmere producing
population in the nation.
The Texas Cashmere Association cannot give you
a single formula to become a successful breeder
of cashmere goats, but we do encourage prospective
breeders to use the method that best works for you.
The end result should be the best cashmere fiber
production with the ability to supply the growing
meat goat market. We can help you make the
Right decision.
